Analysis of vegetation changes with NOAA-AVHRR and MODIS data to detect degradation in northwestern Namibia
Project Description
A previous project (Sa 775/3-1) together with other projects show the correlation of seasonal variations of the Normalized Difference Vegetations Index (NDVI) derived from multi-temporal satellite data and from the seasonal distribution of rainfall.
The aim of this project is to examine the possibility of separating homogenous rainfall regions with the seasonal development of the NDVI. In a second step the vegetation within these regions will be classified in order to detect annual changes by comparing the data of each year. By using an existing time series of NDVI data the possibility of a change detection analysis will be tested. As NOAA AVHRR and MODIS data are free of charge the methodology could be used for a cost-efficient land use management.
